Is it possible to take black and white pictures with this camera?
No, this camera doesn't have a mode for black and white pictures.
But it's easy to create black and white pictures, by setting the saturation to -100 with the DiMAGE Viewer, DiMAGE Master or DiMAGE Master Lite .
Especially the DiMAGE Master offers crative tools for black and white photography for camera raw-files.
There is no camera firmware-update available offering black/white mode.
