The camera shuts down without giving any warning. Is the camera defective?
Such a symptom may occur because alkaline batteries have a characteristic that reduces the capacity sharply during use.
DiMAGE is designed to have a margin before it shuts down, even if the battery is exhausted while saving the capture image data to a CompactFlash card. The data will not be lost.
