Why did Minolta change their flash foot?
The accessory foot used on most flash units today was developed in Germany in the 1920’s. It served its purpose well until multiple contacts were added to the bottom of the flash foot to allow cameras and flashes to become more conversant. The addition of these contact pins required a higher degree of camera-flash alignment that was capable with the older accessory shoe design. Realizing that the design was no longer viable, our engineers created a flash-camera contact that answered all of the complaints of the original design. The result is a design that enables simple, slide-in, positive-locking attachment, absolute flash head alignment allowing more efficient AF illuminator operation, positive electrical contact, and simple, push-button removal.
